J.E.D.I. - Jason Evaristo's Donation Initiative

Welcome to my Man & Woman of the Year home page!

“I shall pass through this world but once.  Any good therefore that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now.  Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

                                                            - Frenchman Stephen Grellet, 1800s

Grellet’s quote above has been my “words to live by” since I first read it many years ago.   Throughout my life, I have strived to help people in need when I possibly can.

In September 2012, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL).  Though I had the love and support of my friends and family, I was still truly terrified.  Cancer was something I never saw coming.  How was I supposed to battle this?  And, more importantly, would I survive?

After months of chemotherapy, my bone marrow biopsy still revealed cancer cells, so my next step was a stem cell transplant.  Thankfully, my brother was a perfect match and was happy to donate his time and cells for his little brother.  On May 21, 2013, I had the transplant -- and it was a success!  It’s been almost a year since the transplant, and I am thrilled to say that there have since been no signs of leukemia in my system!

If it wasn’t for organizations like the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) raising money for medical advancements in blood cancer research, I might not be here today.  So, since getting back on me feet, I vowed to carry on with my “words to live by” quote.  This past October, I began fundraising for the LLS when my family and I joined “Team DreamWorks” and participated in the Society’s “Light The Night Walk” in Hollywood.  It was an amazing experience that I will never forget -- thousands of people gathered to FIGHT CANCER!

Joe Kelley, a coworker, teammate, and fellow survivor, recently approached me about participating in a different LLS’ fundraising effort called “The Man & Woman of the Year” (MWOY) competition.

I was flattered and honored that he felt I would be a good candidate, and my wife and I quickly decided to campaign.  This was an opportunity to continue to live by my motto and help others.

A quick explanation:  The MWOY campaign is a fundraising competition among individuals in the community who, through their participation, vie for the honor of being the Man or Woman of the Year.  Candidates are judged solely on a philanthropic basis.  The individuals who raise the most funds during the ten-week campaign period will be awarded the title of Man and Woman of the Year.  The candidates run in honor of patient survivors who are the Boy and Girl of the Year.  The competition will start 3/22/2014 and will culminate in a grand finale event on 5/31/2014.

Please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign.  Every dollar I raise counts as one vote and the candidate who gets the most votes / raises the most money is named the Man or Woman of the Year.

Thanks to your support, my efforts, will help fund the therapies and treatments and help save lives today.

LLS's continued advancements over the years, are responsible for the blood cancer survival rate doubling and tripling; in some cases, the survival rate has even quadrupled.

For instance, I'm pleased to annonunce the approval of ibrutinib (Imbruvica™), the LLS-funded therapy for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).  This easy-to-take pill - that targets the cancer - may allow CLL patients to avoid the adverse effects of standard chemotherapy.  John C. Byrd, MD, of the Ohio State University, is a world-renowned CLL expert who leads the LLS-funded team that has been instrumental in advancing ibrutinib for CLL and credits LLS funding for making this FDA approval possible.

This past November the FDA also approved ibrutinib to treat patients with mantle cell lymphoma, and it is proving to be a significant advance for patients with this blood cancer.

Ibrutinib is proof of how your support helps advance new therapies that save more lives not someday, but today. Read the full story about ibrutinib.”

Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients but are now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers. They're even being tested in clinical trials for patients with a range of cancers including lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. LLS funded drugs like Gleevec, Sprycel, Arinza, Tasigna and Zolinza are now being tested for patients with other non-cancerous diseases like Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Multiple Sclerosis.

We really are changing the face of blood cancer!

I’ve created Team J.E.D.I., which stands for “Jason Evaristo’s Donation Initiative” to help me in this cause.  Please take the initiative with us and help those that are still in need.  We would be so grateful for your support and generosity.  They'll not only support LLS research but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Please visit my Web site often and bring friends who would also like to donate!

On behalf of Team J.E.D.I., I sincerely thank you in advance for any donation, large or small, that you are able to give.  For more information about LLS, please visit www.lls.org.

Wishing you and your family continued good health and "may the force be with you!”

Warmest regards,

Jason Evaristo
