Team Kenedi and Kendal

Mar 19, 2018

Please join me in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign for Man & Woman of the Year.

I have created Team Twice the Fight and we are driven to find cures for blood cancer. We are working to raise as much as possible over the next 10 weeks. Every dollar we raise counts.

Kenedi and Kendal are identical twin girls.  They share the same parents, same big sisters, same features, and sadly, the same diagnosis.  At 3 months old, Kenedi and Kendal were both diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in August, 2015.  The twins underwent treatment at Mayo clinic by way of chemotherapy and achieved remission after round 1.

They continued on to complete 3 more rounds of chemo during their 129 day hospital stay before leaving in January, 2016.

The twins were happy and healthy until February, 2017.  It was then that we learned Kendal had relapsed and treatment would included a bone marror transplant.  Kendal fought hard during her initial 2 rounds of chemo, battling many side effects, being separated from her twin and big sister, and overcoming a influenza while having literally no immune system.  She was a fighter.

In May of 2017, Kendal underwent a bone marrow transplant and in June, 2017, we learned that it was unsuccessful.  Her cancer was coming back regardless of the new marrow.  Kendal was then deemed terminal.

We took Kendal and our family on an amazing adventure to Disney to soak up as many moments with our sweet girl as possible.  And after that trip, in late July, 2017, with the help of many Doctors within the LLS, LLS advocates and members, Kendal was approved for a drug called Mylotarg.  Mylotarg is dangerous drug which although only had a slim chance of helping her get back into remission, we tried it anyway because .01% chance of helping was still a chance.

Ultimately, Kendal's cancer again proved to be too smart for the drugs.  On September 7, 2017, Kendal Mae Breyfogle died in her father's arms with me at her side.

But Kendal's story doesn't end there.  We have decided to turn our pain into purpose and do something to make a difference.  Not just in memory of our sweet girl, but in honor of our other cancer warrior - Kenedi.  Kenedi recently celebrated 29 months of remission which just reminded us that cancer isn't fair.  Kenedi and Kendal had the same cancer and had the same treatment, but it only worked for one of them.  How can that be?  They have the same DNA so it just doesn't make sense.  But if anything, it is further proof we need to do more to research and study this nasty beast.

After I became a cancer mom and began living out a parents worst nightmare, I developed a passion for being active in the blood cancer fighting community as much as possible.  My girls, as well as other blood cancer warriors, have inspired me to do whatever I can in search of better treatments and ultimately a CURE for blood cancers.

Thanks to your support, my efforts will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements.  Just in 2017 the LLS had a major inpact on new FDA approved therapies, approving 9 new drugs.  This is amazing, but we must keep momentum going.

All donations are greatly appreciated and tax deductible. They'll not only support LLS research, but patient services, advocacy, public and professional education, and community services as well.

Special shout out and thank you to Bill and Carin Simpson for pledging to match dollar for dollar up to $20,000.00!  Thank you for your support!!
