Let Me Tell You About My Dad

Apr 02, 2019

Over the next several weeks I am going to tell you a few of the many reasons why I accepted this nomination.

Today is about my father.  My dad was one of those people that everyone looked up to.  He was the one everyone went to for advice, and he was always there and ready to help.  I tell people all the time that I'm not good at saying no when someone asks me to volunteer, I'm pretty sure I inherited that from my dad.

I’ll never forget the day my phone rang and I was told that after 5 years my father’s cancer had returned.  It was over 7 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.   I have always heard that 5 is the magic number with cancer.  If you make it 5 years you win.  Well dad went just past 5 years before his annual scan showed the cancer had returned.  I remember saying to myself “It’s OK, Dad will beat this, he always does.”  Unfortunately, I was wrong.  This time the cancer was too much to overcome and less than three months later I lost my best friend.

I accepted this nomination to help ensure nobody ever has to go through what my Dad went through.  While this fund raiser is for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. One of these trials may have saved my dad, had they been available to him.

My dad was always proud of my sisters and me, no matter what.  I like to think that he is watching over me as I go through this campaign and today he is even prouder than usual knowing we are fighting the fight for a world where the word cancer is not something to fear.

What is my why?

Mar 25, 2019

As we kickoff the campaign today I have been thinking about my “why”.  Why did I agree to spend the next 10 weeks raising money for LLS?  It’s not that I needed more to do or had a lot of extra time in my schedule that I needed to fill.  I have not been personally effected by Leukemia, Lymphoma or other blood cancers.  So why not just say no when I was nominated?  There are too many “whys’ for me to list but I will give you a couple.

First and foremost, I HATE CANCER!  Cancer took my father from me too early.  I have seen cancer effect many close to me; some have beaten this disease and survived and others have ultimately lost their battles.  I will do whatever I can to help find a cure for all cancer.

I am running for several friends and members of my team that have been effected by cancer.  One is a childhood Leukemia survivor.  Another has been by her husband’s side as he has fought for several years.  One of our team members is currently in the battle of her life, one she will ultimately win, to beat cancer and return to a normal life.  A lifelong friend and team member saw cancer take her mother from her.  I’m sure there are more connections to my team that I do not know.

I am also running for the children of the year and for children everywhere who bravely battle cancer and for their parents and families who watch these children go through pain that most of could not imagine.    I want to see the day that no parent ever has to hear the words “your child has cancer”.

Please join me and the rest of Team Onboard for a Cure as we spend the next 10 weeks raising money and awareness so that one day we will all live in a cancer free world.  Please check back here often and follow along at https://www.facebook.com/On-Board-For-A-Cure to see the many ways you can get involved in this campaign.

The Journey Begins

Jan 19, 2019

I hope you will join me as I begin a 10 week journey that will help find a cure for cancer and eliminate this disease forever.

Together with my team we will be working to raise as much money as possible to help fund the mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Every dollar raised counts as one vote toward winning the title of Man of the Year.  While my competitive side wants to win that title, the real reason I agreed to participate is to find a cure for cancer.  When cancer loses, we all win!

All the money raised will help fund therapies and treatments that are saving lives. Over the years, support from people like you has been responsible for the blood cancer advancements that have doubled, tripled, and in some cases quadrupled the survival rate for some blood cancers.

Many LLS supported therapies not only help blood cancer patients, but are also now used to treat patients with rare forms of stomach and skin cancers and are in clinical trials for patients with lung, brain, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancers. And LLS funded drugs like targeted therapies and immunotherapies are now saving thousands of lives every day.

I encourage you to come back to this page often as I will continue to post here throughout the campaign and share stories from myself and my team members.

Thank you for your support and remember, together we can eliminate all cancers and achieve a goal of a cancer free world!
