Man and Woman of the Year Fundraiser

Mar 22, 2019

Friday, January 14, 2011. I sat on the floor next to my bed and blankly stared at the wall for what felt like an eternity. I had just received a phone call from my dad where, after a long pause, only three words were spoken. “Buddy, I’m sorry.” No words were necessary. The second the phone rang early in the morning to wake me up, I knew.

I knew that after a four year battle with cancer Sam was no longer with us. I knew I lost my best friend and brother-in-law. I knew my sister, Abby, lost her husband. I knew the Haygood’s lost their only son. I knew we all lost someone in our lives that we cherished so much. That was, without a doubt, one of the worst days of my life.

Today marks what will hopefully begin some of the best days of my life. Today, I take a stand to turn that negative into a positive and to ensure that Sam's fight lives on through the revolutionary research funded by LLS.. Today I kickoff my campaign against cancer!

When I learn I was nominated as a Man of the Year candidate I knew, without a doubt, that this was my opportunity to honor Sam at the highest level. Over the next 10 weeks, through the help of my amazing team - we call ourselves Team AweSAM - I will be raising as much money as I can in the fight against cancer. The money raised will go directly to help LLS fund groundbreaking cancer research trials. The same trials that gave us three years of valuable extra time with Sam.

As you know, everyone wins when cancer loses. When the day comes – and it will – that we find a cure for cancer, we will all be able to look back at this moment, the research we funded, and know that we took an active role in finding the cure and removing that nasty word from our vocabulary forever.

Today it is my hope that you will join me in my fight for a world where we don’t have to say a goodbye to another best friend, husband, or son. A world where others don’t lose their Sam.
