Welcome to Steve Valentine's MWOY Fundraising Page!

Apr 03, 2018

Please join me and my Doctor in supporting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) by making a donation to my fundraising campaign for Man & Woman of the Year.

We have created a team that is driven to find cures for blood cancer. Our team is working to raise as much as possible over the next 10 weeks. Every dollar we raise counts as one vote for my team's candidate. The candidate whose team tallies the most votes earns the prestigious title of "Man or Woman of the Year".

“If you get well and out of the hospital, we’ll dance together.”  As cancer patient with a very aggressive form of lymphoma, to hear those words from your oncologist in the hospital bed; it gives hope, comfort and a goal to live and to thrive. Now Dr. Irene Hutchins (who is nominated for Woman of The Year) and I  (as her campaign manager) have aligned with LLS, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Their annual Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) fundraising campaign is a nationwide campaign that raises vital funds to find cures for blood cancers and to support patients and their families and will showcase our “Dancers Vs. Cancer” platform.

“That miracle has been realized for me, Steve Valentine, a guy that’s never gets a cold, broken an arm, or been in a hospital….. until January 2016.”  I was rushed to the ER and had lifesaving surgery to remove lymphomas that had burst my intestine.  Guiding me through the harrowing journey of tests, myriad procedures, chemotherapy/immunotherapy, treatments and post op/post chemo recuperation is this year’s nominee for LLS’s Man & woman of the Year, my oncologist Dr. Irene Hutchins.

Scripps Green Hospital

The twist to my story is that when Dr. Hutchins and I learned that we both shared a passion for dance and were previous competitive ballroom champions, a new chapter started.  She was warm, beautiful, caring, comforting and concerned.  I developed a new enthusiasm knowing my journey would be shared, not only by a consummate professional, but by someone who was like me, knew the joy of dance and how the body worked - - - not only from a medical perspective but from an athletic stance. It placed us on a new trajectory, that not only renewed our love of the sport that we’d both abandoned for years, but set in motion a new way to communicate the challenges and triumphs of living with and beating cancer.  She and her team choreographed a plan that allowed me to triumph over tragedy.

I did get out of the hospital and we did start dancing, first socially with a group of like-minded friends, and then more importantly, for others, strangers, patients, survivors, the media, and thousands touched by cancer. There were local newscasts where we performed our “victory” dance to the disco hit, “I Will Survive,” newspaper interviews and even national coverage on Inside Edition television show.  It was a new way for me to share my joy and thanks while helping others fighting cancer find that place inside themselves to put one foot in front of the other to keep going. Special shout out to my partner, James Miller, and our "daughter," border terrier Olympia, that kept me going through the rough times . . .  and to mom, Vinnie Valentine and her "mutt" productions.

As a public relations guy, I’ve always had to communicate a client’s news.  That dialogue is now extended to a greater purpose, that by sharing mine and Dr. Hutchins’s story and unique relationship, we both are asking the community to help us do more for people like me.
